Excerpt: ... BIBLIOGRAPHY CHAPTER V J. J. Jusserand's English Novel in the Time of Shakespeare (London, 1890, trans, by E. Lee) offers the best account of sixteenth-century fiction. The same author's Literary History of the English People (N. Y., 1906, vol. ii) deals less fully with this matter. Robert Palfrey Titter's The Beginnings of the Picaresque Novel in England (Harvard Monthly, Apr., 1906) demonstrates the futility of assuming Spanish influence upon Nash. Martin A. S. Hume's Spanish Influence in English Literature (London, 1905) is inadequate and untrustworthy in its treatment of picaresque fiction and Spanish inspiration. It owes, moreover, an unacknowledged debt for most that is not inaccurate to John Garrett Underbill's authoritative Spanish Literature in the England of the Tudori (N. Y., 1899). Much slighter is Ludwig Bahlsen's Spanische Quetten der Englischen Litteratur besonders Englands zu Shakespeares Zeii (in the Zetischr. f. vergl. lUteraturgeschichte, n. f., vi, 1893). Other notices of Spanish influence in England for this period almost exclusively concern the drama. The Complete Works of Thomas Nash was edited in the Huth Library by Alex. B. Grosart (London, 1883-85, 6 vols.). Edmund Gosse has reprinted The Vnfortvnate Traveller separately with an introduction (London, 1892), and Ronald B. McKerrow has issued four volumes of Nash's Works (London, 1904-05). Here The Vnfortvnate Traveller (in vol. ii) reproduces the Bodleian text of 1594, which differs slightly from the earlier text of the British Museum used by Gosse and by Grosart (in vol. v). 2-3 ChetUe's Piers Plainnes Prentiship survives in a unique copy in the Bodleian. His Kind-Harts Dreame is edited by E. F. Rimbault (vol. v, Percy Soc. Publ.), and appears together with England's Mourning G...
